Creating Supportive Conditions for Revitalising and Evolving Lefkara’s Embroidery Tradition
CySEA is leading the way by undertaking, for the first time, the digital documentation of Lefkaritiko embroidery. The aim is to create a Digital Archive that will serve as a repository of educational and informational material.
As part of the Margarita Programme, CySEA is creating a comprehensive Video Archive, which will include videos demonstrating, step by step, the processes and techniques involved in the creation of Lefkaritiko embroidery.
In collaboration with professional filmmakers, the filming process was recently completed. Participating in the project were experienced embroiderers from Lefkara, with whom CySEA has been working for many years. These women represent the last remaining “yeast” of knowledge surrounding Lefkaritiko embroidery.
The Video Archive will be divided into thematic categories, based on the stages, techniques, and patterns of Lefkaritiko embroidery.
Soon available on our website!
To complement the digital video archive, CySEA is also planning to create a handbook, which will include photographs and step-by-step instructions for the creation of each Lefkaritiko design.
Through a series of educational initiatives – including hands-on workshops, educational programmes, resource packs, and educational games – CySEA places particular emphasis on educating both adults and young people about Lefkaritiko embroidery. By engaging with and becoming familiar with this traditional craft, the uninterrupted continuation of Cyprus’s centuries-old embroidery art is ensured.
CySEA regularly organises hands-on workshops to teach Lefkaritiko embroidery. Instruction is provided by experienced embroiderers from Lefkara, at the Lefkara Handicraft Centre. Teaching is personalised and adapted to the needs of both beginners and more advanced learners. Find out more about the upcoming workshops through our website and register your interest!
CySEA organises and participates in a variety of educational programmes for children and young people, both within the school curriculum and beyond. These programmes make use of specially designed games and educational materials developed as part of the initiative. Some of the educational activities carried out so far include:
Educational sessions for primary school children, as part of the formal school curriculum
Presentation of educational resource packs and embroidery instruction to lower secondary school pupils, within the framework of the Health Education subject
Integration of the “Margarita” programme games into an educational activity at the Limassol Municipal University Library, organised by the company Mikros Odysseas
Hands-on workshop held as part of the 47th Pancyprian Symposium of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network
CySEA’s academic team has designed and developed four educational games, each aimed at children of different age groups:
“Learning About Lefkara”: A knowledge-based quiz game with multiple levels of difficulty, introducing children to Lefkara and Lefkaritiko embroidery through fun facts and interesting information
“The Embroidery of Memory”: A memory game inspired by traditional Lefkaritiko patterns
“Lefkaritiko Patterns”: A creative game using wooden geometric shapes, which children can use to recreate embroidery designs. The game includes a set of cards with patterns, photographs, and information about some of the most important motifs found in Lefkaritiko embroidery
“Lefkaritiko Domino”: A wooden domino set featuring engraved Lefkaritiko motifs
CySEA has created educational packs containing materials and instructions for creating Lefkaritiko embroidery. There are packs available for both adults and children.
Our “Margarita” Programme is dedicated to preserving and revitalising Lefkaritiko embroidery through a wide range of targeted actions. These include the ongoing development of a digital platform featuring educational content, a virtual museum, and games; the creation of partnerships for sustainable planning; and incentives for young people to explore embroidery as a profession. The Programme also supports local artisans in modernising their businesses, while nurturing new interest among children and youth in Lefkara’s craft heritage. Educational packs, creative activities, workshops, and new games complement the effort, alongside continuous evaluation to ensure the Programme remains effective and impactful.
