In Cyprus, a blooming initiative is bringing Lefkara embroidery back into the spotlight, connecting it with modern education, technology, and local development. The “Margarita” program, created by the Cyprus Organization for Education through the Arts (COEA), is an innovative action showing how tradition can become a powerful tool for learning and cultural sustainability.
Education Inspired by Cultural Heritage
The “Margarita” program breathes new life into Lefkara embroidery, which is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. Through educational kits for schools and families, fairy tales inspired by Lefkara, creative games, and visual aids, tradition becomes accessible and appealing to children. At the same time, educators gain tools and lesson plans to integrate the theme into various subjects such as Art, History, and even Mathematics.

Knowledge Passed from Hand to Hand
The experiential learning workshops organized at the Lefkara Handicraft Centre form the living core of the program. There, new students learn embroidery techniques directly from experienced women of Lefkara, following the traditional method of apprenticeship. These actions have already created a new community of young embroiderers who continue the thread of centuries-old knowledge.
Tradition… Just a Click Away
Technology plays a crucial role. A rich digital archive with videos is being created to teach Lefkara techniques step by step, while soon the program’s online platform will function as a virtual museum, educational library, and online shop—opening this local gem to the world.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals
“Margarita” doesn’t just support education and culture. It actively implements the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting quality education (SDG 4) and keeping communities and their cultural identity alive (SDG 11).
Inspiration for Every Educator
For educators, “Margarita” highlights the powerful link between teaching and local culture. It serves as an excellent example of how interdisciplinary education, experiential learning, and the use of digital tools can contribute to students’ development while also strengthening communities.

An Open Invitation
The Cyprus Organization for Education through the Arts (COEA) invites educators, artists, and all interested individuals to actively participate in the implementation of the “Margarita” program, supporting an effort that showcases tradition and connects it with modern education and society.
